A Remake of Freewar - Introducing Freemake

Freewar is a video game I spent quite some time on. I was repeatedly drawn back to further explore that world and its stories. Looking at the games I worked on, I don’t find as much stuff to explore. This is an area I want to develop further. Since I already have a concrete example of the direction I am aiming for, it seems reasonable to start with building on that, remaking Freewar, and adjust it to my preferences.

Freewar is a multiplayer online game, but I don’t expect to implement such functionality for my little experiment. Synchronization of game state between many players would probably require too much effort for now. What I want to maintain is the visual diversity of the game world. With today’s technology, I think it will be easy enough to present it in a more lively way.

For the foreseeable future, I will publish the game at https://distilledgames.itch.io/freemake

The image below shows the initial design of the map for the Freemake game. This should be sufficient for the first playable version. Next step is to bring this in the game so players can walk around in there.

After the first release last week, I continue working on the map design.

I am expanding the map with a cave which you can enter at the mountains:
